In an unfortunate series of events, 7 CRPF Jawans happened to lose their lives after they stopped to collect a cooler for their sniffer dog ‘Scout’ in a Maoist strike in Dantewada on Wednesday. An IED blast blew up their vehicle as they stepped out to fetch the cooler.

40-50kgs of explosives were placed beneath the road where the vehicle was stationed at. According to sources, 3 Jawans were shot with AK-47 bullets before the blasts occurred. CRPF Officers state that this act was done by Maoists who were keeping a close watch on these men since the last 7-8 days.

The dog, Scout, who these Army men were trying to cater to, has reportedly detected a large number of IEDs for CRPF in Dantewada over the years and was one the best sniffer dogs they had with them. The canine was having a difficult time adjusting to the heat and was suffering from sever dehydration. In an interview with TOI, “CRPF takes a cautious approach while travelling in Naxal-affected areas, using civil dress and unconventional vehicles as part of the deception plan. But the deception failed this time,” said an officer.
