In a harrowing series of events, a 54-year-old father has been sent to jail for 21 years after he confessed to raping his 16-year-old daughter – only to prove “sex was better with men” after she confessed she’s a lesbian.
The Independent reports that the man attacked his young daughter after she shared her struggles with her identity, to which he responded with “real and uncontrolled anger”.
The report added that the unnamed man had been raping his older daughter for many years now and when she moved out of the house, he began abusing his second daughter.
The man admitted to raping his daughters in the court but pleaded not guilty. He was later proven guilty of three rapes in total, which took place during the 1980s and 1990s and the court heard how he began sexually assaulting one daughter first and then started with the younger one after she left the house.
Judge Andrew Lockhart of Warwick Crown Court dismissed his plea rather quickly and said, “listening to evidence of her feeling of guilt at leaving her sister to face you was the most harrowing of evidence” after he heard what the elder daughter had to say.
“Across a period of 21 years you were committing serious sexual offences against your daughters.”
“Counts one to three were when you were grooming and moving towards sexually touching . She was 11 and this went on for three years. It affected her greatly. She left the home, and she thought her sister would be safe, because she thought you would never touch in the same way,” Judge Lockhard said.
“But you groomed your daughter in the same way and began assaults on her. As a 16-year-old girl she realised she was gay and, struggling with her identity as many people do at that age, she decided to tell you.”
“You reacted by showing real and uncontrolled anger, and you decided to rape her to show her why it would be better to have sex with men than women. Her evidence made harrowing listening.”
The Judge termed the rape as a degradation and humiliation and said that his offence demonstrates his hostility towards her as a lesbian.
The rapist’s barrister Sally Hancox had argued that the offences could be dealt with by a “determinate sentence”, arguing that his assault on his daughter ended years ago and he hasn’t been involved in any further offences.
The Judge, however, took no time in dismissing the plea and sentenced him to 21 years in prison, along with an additional five years on licence when he eventually gets released. Unlike other prisoners, he will not be granted parole after serving half of his sentence and will have to wait for two-thirds of the sentence instead.
The Judge also noted that the man will be registered as a ‘sex offender’ for life.
He closed the case with some wise words.
“It is vital they now receive the support they need to attempt to move forward with their lives,” he said. “This case shows that survivors of abuse will be listened to, no matter how long ago it happened or who the abuser was. They do not need to suffer in silence.”
