Her daughter is settled in the US and her husband passed away in 2014, leaving this 64-year-old woman alone in Pune. (Let’s call her Reena for convenience.) Reena, who is now retired, had earlier taught at a Union Government research institute.
Left alone to fend for herself, Reena found solace in her newfound friendship with Harley Benson, on Facebook. Benson had told her that he belonged from London. As their friendship strengthened gradually with time, they exchanged numbers in May 2016 and started talking on WhatsApp therefrom.
Soon their friendship started transitioning into a greater bond and that was of love. Benson, as the Times of India reported, expressed his feelings of love to her and promised that he would marry her. He also showed enthusiasm at the thought of settling in India thereby winning her confidence.
The time for them to unite came when he told her that he was moving to Pune on 27th July along with 95,000 worth of gold and diamonds. Bringing that from abroad would obviously involve a hassle with the customs department at the airport.
He subsequently called her to tell her that he had been taken captive by the customs officials at the Delhi airport and he was required to pay a fine to free himself. However, he wasn’t carrying enough money. He then requested her to pay his fine.
Reena then sold a piece of land to help her lover in need. He messaged her a couple of bank accounts into which she deposited Rs. 94.5 lakh over time.
As soon as Benson got hold of the money, he switched off his mobile for good. On not being able to reach him and having exhausted her money in vain, Reena approached the police. The police have procured the various bank accounts’ details and are out on a manhunt for this conman.
